Microsoft 365 and MCP: mail, files and Teams context, with human sending

Connect Microsoft 365 context through Work IQ MCP, review Graph permissions and tenant consent, and keep email, Teams posts and invitations under human control.

🎯 For Developers and tenant administrators bringing Microsoft 365 documents, mail and meeting context into bounded agent tasks.

📚 You will learn
  • Choose the current Microsoft MCP route for a new project
  • Distinguish Graph permissions from Work IQ authorization
  • Connect an editor client with tenant administrator review
  • Keep outbound messages human-sent

Microsoft 365 can provide mail, meeting, Teams and SharePoint context to an MCP client; Microsoft currently directs new projects to Work IQ MCP. The older Outlook Mail, Teams and SharePoint MCP servers are retained for backward compatibility and should not be chosen for new production projects, according to Microsoft’s server guidance. For a context-only workflow, keep outbound messages human-sent and verify that the connection actually enforces that boundary.

What it can do

As of 30 Oct 2026, Microsoft’s CLI guide describes retrieving mail, meeting, document and Teams context from an editor. Try these bounded tasks with approved organizational data:

  • Prepare an implementation brief from an approved specification and related meeting notes. Ask for source links and unresolved requirements before generating a patch.
  • Compare a decision recorded in Teams with the latest document. Require the assistant to identify disagreement rather than quietly merge conflicting instructions.
  • Extract acceptance criteria from an email conversation. Keep customer names and unrelated attachments out of the coding task where possible.
  • Draft a meeting follow-up locally, then let a person check recipients, attachments and wording and send it in the normal application.

A useful output separates the source statement, its location, the proposed task and questions for a human. A summary alone can hide whether a requirement came from an approved specification or a casual suggestion. Open the cited material before treating it as authority.

Permissions decide the boundary

For a connector built directly on Microsoft Graph, distinguish delegated permissions from application permissions. Delegated access combines the app’s grant with the signed-in user’s access; application access works without that user. Tenant policy can require administrator involvement even where a delegated permission normally allows user consent. See Graph’s permissions overview.

Graph’s permission reference, as of 30 Oct 2026, distinguishes Mail.Read, Mail.ReadWrite and Mail.Send: reading mail, changing mailbox content and sending are separate capabilities. Mail.ReadWrite does not include sending. These are Graph permissions, not a universal scope recipe for every MCP server; review the actual application registration and connector documentation.

Work IQ has its own authorization surface. The documented delegated WorkIQAgent.Ask permission requires admin consent and includes read and write access through Work IQ agents. An ask-only interface therefore does not establish a read-only connection. Review the Work IQ permission reference before approving it.

How to connect it safely

  1. Define the task and sending rule. Choose an approved document or meeting note and a narrow question. Specify local output, no mailbox changes, no chat posts and no invitations. A prompt communicates intent; it does not enforce permissions. Use the MCP security checklist to record the account, allowed data and actions.

  2. Have the tenant administrator review access. For Work IQ CLI, Microsoft lists Node.js, administrative consent, a Copilot Studio usage-based billing plan linked to an Azure subscription and resource group, and assignment of the user to that plan as prerequisites. Confirm these in the current CLI documentation; an editor subscription alone should not be assumed to cover this service. Agree who owns usage and revocation before connecting.

  3. Prove that sending is blocked. Work IQ MCP supports actions as well as retrieval, with policy applied to paths and methods; see the MCP overview. Require an administrator-reviewed policy that rejects outbound operations, including actions reachable through agent questions. Tool selection alone may leave broader capabilities reachable. If the deployed configuration cannot demonstrate that restriction, use manually selected excerpts instead of granting live access for this workflow.

  4. Add the reviewed server in VS Code. In a supported MCP client session, run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette. For Microsoft’s local CLI recipe, choose Command (stdio) and use npx -y @microsoft/workiq mcp; review the package and runtime before allowing execution. Follow Microsoft’s EULA and sign-in steps. The VS Code guide explains configuration destinations and trust prompts. Other editor clients need their own supported configuration.

  5. Inspect an actual retrieval. Ask for the decision and source link from your approved document. Expand the tool result, confirm the intended server answered, and compare it with the document. Test outbound denial in an isolated environment without contacting real recipients. If access is broader than agreed, stop and correct the policy. Document how the administrator can revoke the connection.

When this does not work

The server is absent or blocked. Microsoft says tenant availability can vary with region, rollout, licensing, approval and policy. Check the tenant’s Tools registry rather than assuming an online server listing establishes access. A familiar server name may also point to the legacy experience.

Sign-in succeeds but content is missing. Check the signed-in tenant and account, the user’s access to the original item, the application’s grant and the actual tool response. Do not solve an unexplained access failure by approving every permission. For meeting context, first establish that the required notes exist and are accessible.

The client connects but never retrieves anything. Check whether the intended tool is enabled and inspect its output. A plausible answer generated without a tool result is not evidence that the integration works.

The workflow needs a dependable no-send guarantee. Microsoft’s administration guide says individual tool controls apply only to supported registered servers and are rolling out. Do not assume every tenant exposes them or that disabling an obvious send tool covers indirect agent actions. If enforcement is uncertain, return to approved excerpts and manual sending.

Where Tvijo fits

As of 30 Oct 2026, the DSHREM VS Code extension provides an editor entry for Tvijo tasks with selected context. An approved extract from a document or meeting note can become input to an implementation brief or review. Sending that extract to Tvijo is a separate data-sharing decision; read permissions and data flow first.

TvijoCode is a test build with the extension embedded. Tvijo MCP makes Tvijo callable by a compatible MCP client; its consultation role does not automatically make the Tvijo editor a client for other servers. Editor integration and safe delegation remain planned phases in that product description. None of these establishes a ready Microsoft 365 connector. A company-specific connection needs a scoped pilot, access review and acceptance criteria.

For this workflow, document and meeting context feed a task; outbound messages are never automatic. Produce a local draft, review it and send it manually. That is the operating boundary proposed here, not a claim that installing Tvijo disables Microsoft-side actions.

As of 30 Oct 2026, Tvijo’s workspace lists Try at $0: up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first, with a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown as $10 and is a request for prepaid credit: metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge.

FAQ

Which Outlook MCP server should a new project use?

Use the route described above after tenant approval. A matching product name does not establish who publishes a connector or which actions it allows.

No. Consent grants the permissions shown. Work IQ’s documented ask permission includes writing; your workflow needs an enforced restriction on outbound operations, or manually supplied context.

Can Teams and SharePoint context lead straight to a sent follow-up?

Keep a human between the draft and sending. Verify the source, recipients and attachments, then send in the normal application. This guide’s context workflow does not authorize automatic posting or invitations.
