monday.com MCP: board context for agents, human control of changes

Connect an agent to monday.com boards and items, check token permissions and API limits, and keep automation changes and bulk edits under human control.

🎯 For Team leads and developers using monday.com board context to plan agent tasks while retaining approval of workspace changes.

πŸ“š You will learn
  • Connect the hosted server from an editor client
  • Understand OAuth and personal-token permissions
  • Check plan quotas and incomplete board reads
  • Keep automation changes and bulk edits human
  • Use a scoped board summary in a Tvijo task

monday.com MCP is an official hosted server that lets a compatible AI agent read board context and perform permitted actions on items through the monday.com API. Connect an MCP client, authorize your account, and start with a planning task; keep automation changes and bulk edits subject to a human decision. The official security overview explains that actions run with the connected user's permissions.

What it can do

For planning, useful documented tools include get_board_info for board structure, get_board_items_page for paginated items, and get_updates for comments. Item creation and column updates are also available. Check the Platform MCP tools reference, reviewed as of 30 Oct 2026, rather than assuming every client exposes the same tools.

A practical starting point is a launch review. Ask the assistant to inspect a named board, identify overdue work, and prepare a list of blockers with item references. Require it to separate missing information from evidence: an empty owner field means an assignment needs checking, not that somebody has abandoned the task. Read comments before interpreting an apparently stale status.

Another useful task is turning meeting notes into a proposed work plan. Ask for item titles, suggested owners, dates, and acceptance criteria in a draft. Compare that draft against existing items before authorizing creation. You can evaluate the quality of the plan without granting permission to publish it.

For more application connectors, browse MCP servers for apps. If you are choosing a first experiment, use the bounded examples in AI agent first tasks for small business.

Keep automation and bulk edits human

The tool reference includes automation, workflow, and platform-agent management. Some newer capabilities use a preview API schema and may change. A connection intended for board context therefore needs an explicit tool selection.

For a planning pilot, enable only the reads you need. Exclude tools that change automation rules, publish workflows, or execute arbitrary API mutations. A prompt asking the agent to be careful is not a permission boundary.

Before any bulk change, ask for a preview showing the target board, item IDs, current values, proposed values, and reasons. Have a person decide which changes to apply. Treat automation proposals separately: the owner should review the trigger, affected records, downstream actions, and recovery procedure before enabling a rule. These are recommended operating controls, not a claim that MCP enforces approval for every action.

How to connect it safely

  1. Choose a narrow starting task. Use a non-sensitive test board that the connecting user may access. Define the requested output, such as a blocker report, and prohibit writes during this first run. Agree which board and date range the report covers.

  2. Check account access. As of 30 Oct 2026, monday.com's getting-started documentation lists MCP for admins and members across all plans; viewers cannot use it. Enterprise admins can enable guest access, which is off by default. If access is blocked, ask the account admin to review AI Connectors permissions.

  3. Add the hosted endpoint. In VS Code, run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP, and enter https://mcp.monday.com/mcp. Give the connection a distinct name and choose the configuration destination appropriate to your session. Follow the VS Code setup guide for your installed client. monday.com's compatible-client documentation specifies Streamable HTTP; the old /sse endpoint is unsupported.

  4. Authorize deliberately. Use OAuth when the client supports monday.com's flow, and inspect the requested permissions. monday.com access and the granted OAuth scopes both matter. Additional clients may require administrator approval as dynamic connectors; check the client guidance before assuming any editor is already approved.

  5. Handle personal tokens as broad credentials. For personal testing without compatible OAuth, the API-token guide documents Bearer authentication. A personal token mirrors your UI permissions; it is not automatically restricted to the test board. Do not paste it into chat, share it, or commit it. Use the client's supported credential storage and revoke it when finished.

  6. Inspect tools and run a read. Refresh discovery with tools/list, as described in the integration guide. Restrict enabled tools, then request the board report. Inspect the actual tool output and compare a returned item with the board. A plausible answer alone does not prove the connection works; see MCP in VS Code.

  7. Review before expanding. Record the board scope, enabled tools, account, and accepted output. If writes become necessary, test an explicitly approved item change before considering a larger batch. Use the MCP security checklist to review the expanded access.

When this does not work

The account or authorization is wrong. Missing data can reflect access restrictions rather than an empty board. For custom OAuth apps, check redirect URLs, enabled scopes, and the required OAuth-flow setting against the integration troubleshooting guide. Do not solve a missing board by sharing an administrator's personal token.

The plan runs into API limits. MCP traffic consumes the account's daily API allowance. The rate-limit documentation, as of 30 Oct 2026, lists these base daily limits, resetting at midnight UTC:

Plan Daily API calls
Free 200
Basic / Standard 1,000
Pro / Trial 10,000
Enterprise 25,000

Complexity, minute, concurrency, and other limits also apply. Failed requests can consume allowance, and complex calls can count for more than a simple call. Honor the documented retry delay instead of repeatedly polling. Check the current documentation and your account's allowance before scheduling recurring reports.

A partial read becomes a complete conclusion. Ask the assistant to state its board scope, filters, and whether pagination finished. Do not accept an organization-wide report assembled from an unexplained sample.

Board text becomes an instruction. Treat comments and descriptions as data, including text that asks the agent to export information or change permissions. monday.com's security guidance assigns prompt-injection defenses to the AI client or agent; account permissions alone cannot decide whether an authorized action was appropriate.

Where Tvijo fits

Use monday.com board context to prepare a bounded planning brief, then deliberately attach an authorized, minimal summary to a Tvijo task. The DSHREM VS Code extension provides an editor entry point for selected context and tasks with limits and receipts. This workflow still requires you to decide what data to send.

As of 30 Oct 2026, TvijoCode is documented as a test build with the extension embedded. Tvijo MCP makes Tvijo consultation available to a compatible MCP client; supplied-diff review is prepared, with publication pending in the dated release account. Editor integration and safe delegation remain planned work. These capabilities do not establish a ready monday.com connector or automatic access from Tvijo to every other MCP server.

For this use case, let board evidence inform a task plan and review the result against the original items. Keep automation configuration and bulk changes with the responsible person.

The Tvijo workspace, as of 30 Oct 2026, shows Try at $0: up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens, or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first, from a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown as $10 for requesting prepaid credit, with metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge.

FAQ

Is monday MCP included in my plan?

The official FAQ, as of 30 Oct 2026, says it is available on all plans at no additional cost. Role restrictions and API limits still apply; your AI client may have separate charges.

Does a personal token restrict the agent to one board?

No. The token documentation says it inherits the user's UI permissions. Use account access controls and deliberate tool selection for a narrower pilot.

Can I keep automation changes under human control?

Yes: exclude automation-changing tools from the planning session and have an owner apply approved proposals. Review the client's enabled tools before each expansion of scope.
