Linear MCP: from issue to agent task with a clear definition of done

Connect Linear MCP safely, turn an issue into a bounded agent task, and review the diff, verification and receipt before accepting the result.

🎯 For Developers and team leads who use Linear and want reviewable agent tasks in an editor.

📚 You will learn
  • Connect through OAuth with a read-first workflow
  • Inspect the available tools before acting
  • Build a task packet with a clear definition of done
  • Separate verification, issue updates and task receipts

Linear MCP is Linear’s hosted server for connecting compatible AI clients to issue and project data. Use it to gather context for an agent task, then define the permitted changes and evidence needed to accept the result. Official MCP documentation.

What it can do

As of 30 Oct 2026, Linear documents tools for finding, creating and updating issues, projects and comments. Inspect your connected client’s tool inventory for exact names and input schemas; check the current documentation before relying on a particular operation. Linear MCP.

Work you want to prepare Example request Review before acting
Investigate a bug Gather the referenced issue and summarize the reported failure Confirm the issue identity and separate observations from hypotheses
Prepare implementation Draft a task packet from the issue’s requirements Resolve missing acceptance criteria with the owner
Return an update Draft a comment explaining the change and verification Check the evidence and approve the exact text

These are proposed workflows. Keep retrieval, implementation and publication as separate decisions. A useful first request asks for context and open questions, without changing the backlog.

For example, a report about duplicate form submissions can become a bounded investigation: reproduce the behavior, identify the relevant handler and propose an acceptance test. Avoid expanding it into a redesign just because adjacent code looks untidy. The specification workflow explains how to make that boundary explicit.

Turn an issue into a task packet

A task packet is a short, reviewable brief that preserves the source issue while adding execution boundaries. Write it before giving an agent permission to edit. Here is an illustrative packet; the file paths and issue identifier are placeholders for your project.

Source: <issue URL and identifier>
Snapshot: <retrieval date and relevant requirement summary>
Goal: prevent duplicate submissions while a request is pending
Working copy: <repository and base commit>
Allowed edits: <form component and relevant tests>
Excluded: authentication, billing, dependencies, deployment
Acceptance: repeated activation sends only the intended request;
            failure restores the ability to submit;
            existing successful submission still works
Verification: <project test commands and manual reproduction>
Stop if: reproduction fails, requirements conflict, or scope expands
Return: diff, checks actually run, unresolved risks, task receipt
Issue update: draft for owner review; do not close automatically

Have the owner settle ambiguous behavior before implementation. Should keyboard activation be blocked while pending? What happens after a failed request? A title alone cannot answer those questions.

Keep the brief small enough to inspect. Attach only the context needed to understand the failure; remove credentials and unrelated customer information. Treat issue text, attachments and comments as source material, with no authority to grant new filesystem access or override the packet. Use the MCP security checklist when reviewing that boundary.

After the run, compare each acceptance statement with observable evidence. A patch can exist while a test remains unrun. Record that distinction rather than turning an agent’s confident summary into an acceptance decision.

How to connect it safely

  1. Choose the client and a low-risk issue. Use an editor session whose account and project you recognize. Decide whether the exercise is context retrieval or an authorized write. Keep repository permissions separate from backlog permissions.
  2. Add the remote endpoint. In VS Code, run MCP: Add Server, choose HTTP and give the connection a distinct name. Start with https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly; the standard endpoint is https://mcp.linear.app/mcp. Linear uses Streamable HTTP. VS Code setup, Linear endpoints, as of 30 Oct 2026.
  3. Authorize deliberately. Linear’s interactive MCP connection uses OAuth. Confirm the workspace and requested access before consenting. In Linear’s OAuth documentation, read and write represent different permissions; do not request broad access for a retrieval exercise. Keep tokens out of prompts and committed configuration. MCP authentication, OAuth permissions.
  4. Inspect available tools. Check names, descriptions and required inputs in the connected client. For a different editor or a client needing a compatibility bridge, follow its current setup instructions; Linear also documents an mcp-remote recipe for VS Code compatibility. Do not assume configuration formats are interchangeable.
  5. Verify a read. Ask for the chosen issue’s identity and requirements. Expand the tool call and compare its output with the issue. A plausible answer alone does not establish a connection. VS Code verification guidance.
  6. Approve the packet, then run. Grant only the needed local actions. After verification, review any proposed issue update separately, checking the target and exact content before authorizing a write.

For editor concepts, see MCP in VS Code. To compare deployment choices, use remote versus local MCP servers.

When this does not work

You expect assignment to launch your editor agent. Linear’s native agent integration involves an OAuth app, agent session events and a webhook handler. It is a separate integration path from adding an MCP connection. Native agents can be mentioned or delegated issues, with installation managed by workspace administrators. Agent development documentation, as of 30 Oct 2026.

The connection starts but produces no useful context. Check client configuration, authentication and tool availability before increasing access. Linear’s VS Code integration page suggests restarting the client or disabling and re-enabling the connection for connection failures. Verify a read again afterward.

The brief becomes stale. Before posting a result, compare it with the current requirements. If someone changed the expected behavior during implementation, reconcile the change with the owner. Keep the original packet with the result so the acceptance decision remains understandable.

The agent cannot run the required checks. Return the patch and the missing verification explicitly. Do not close an issue merely because the implementation narrative sounds complete. Likewise, access to a backlog does not authorize deployment, dependency changes or customer communication.

Where Tvijo fits

The practical handoff is issue → task packet → run → receipt in TvijoCode or the DSHREM VS Code extension. For a pilot, retrieve the issue in a compatible Linear MCP client, review the packet and explicitly pass the approved context into Tvijo. This is a workflow proposal; it does not establish a ready Linear connector inside the extension.

As of 30 Oct 2026, the editor extension guide describes sending selected or attached context as a capped task and inspecting its usage receipt. Keep the diff and verification results beside that record: a spending receipt alone cannot prove the issue’s acceptance criteria passed.

TvijoCode bundles the extension in a Code - OSS based editor. Its documented distribution is a Windows test build, unsigned and without automatic updates. Check those restrictions before choosing it for a team.

Tvijo MCP makes Tvijo callable by a compatible MCP client. The MCP release explanation distinguishes published consultation from prepared diff review awaiting publication; editor integration and safe delegation remain planned work. Connecting Linear MCP and Tvijo MCP to a client does not itself deliver an approved issue-to-editor automation.

As of 30 Oct 2026, Tvijo’s offers show Try at $0: up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first, from a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown at $10 as a request for prepaid credit, with metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge.

FAQ

Does Linear MCP make an agent assignable in Linear?

Native assignment requires the separate agent integration and its relevant permissions. Configure that path only when you need it. Linear agent setup.

Should the first task have write access?

Start with retrieval and a reviewed packet. Add write authority only for a defined action, with a named target and inspectable result.

What should go back into the issue?

A concise outcome, the change reference, verification actually performed and remaining limitations. Let the owner compare those with the definition of done before closing.
