Google Drive and Workspace MCP: document access and email gates

Compare official and community Workspace MCP servers, understand OAuth scopes, and use document context while keeping outbound email behind explicit approval.

🎯 For Developers and workspace administrators connecting agents to Drive, Docs or Gmail while controlling data access and outbound email.

πŸ“š You will learn
  • Distinguish official preview servers from community implementations
  • Understand reading, writing and mail-sending scopes
  • Connect an editor client with a retrieval test
  • Keep outbound email behind explicit approval
  • Recognize Tvijo’s documented integration boundaries

Google Drive MCP, Gmail MCP servers and Google Workspace MCP servers connect an agent to account data through tools, with access determined by authorization and the server. As of 30 Oct 2026, Google offers official remote servers for Drive, Docs and Gmail in Developer Preview; community implementations also exist, as described in Google's configuration guide and the community repository below. Start with document retrieval, and require explicit approval before any outbound email.

Which servers exist?

The official service has separate endpoints for each application, using Streamable HTTP and OAuth 2.0:

Integration target Official remote endpoint
Google Drive https://drivemcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Docs https://docsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Gmail https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1

These addresses come from Google's server configuration documentation, as of 30 Oct 2026. Developer Preview availability is a prerequisite, not a promise that every account can connect immediately.

A community alternative is taylorwilsdon/google_workspace_mcp. Its repository documents Gmail, Drive and Docs support, local stdio and remote Streamable HTTP operation, and a read-only mode. It is maintained outside Google. Assess its actual release, dependencies and credential handling separately; a familiar product name does not establish who runs the server.

For background, read what MCP is or browse MCP servers for apps.

What it can do

Use document access to answer a bounded task. For a coding change, ask the agent to find the approved migration specification, extract acceptance criteria and return source links before proposing edits. Google's Drive MCP guide documents file search, metadata retrieval and content reading.

For a document task, the official Docs server can read document structure and text, and update structure or styling. A sensible first workflow is to extract requirements into a local checklist. Treat changes to the shared document as a separate authorization decision.

For mail, a useful proposed workflow is to summarize an authorized thread and prepare a reply for review. Decide whether the result should remain local text or become a mailbox draft: creating a draft already writes remote data. Neither operation should imply permission to send.

What the OAuth scopes actually allow

Scopes describe an authorization boundary. A tool list and a task instruction must narrow the intended workflow further. The following scope meanings are documented as of 30 Oct 2026. Each suffix below follows https://www.googleapis.com/auth/.

Scope suffix Meaning and practical consequence
drive.readonly View and download Drive files; read-only can still expose sensitive content.
drive.file Create files and modify files opened with or shared with the app; this grants write access within that scope.
gmail.readonly Read messages and settings.
gmail.compose Manage drafts and send email.
gmail.send Send email on the user's behalf.

See Google's Drive scope definitions and Gmail scope definitions. In particular, drive.file does not turn an accompanying drive.readonly grant into access only to selected files.

Google's Docs MCP setup lists drive.readonly, drive.file, documents.readonly and documents. Review the requested set against the tools you intend to allow. Do not assume a complete setup recipe provides read-only operation; check the current documentation for the supported combination.

Why sending email needs a gate

The distinction between drafting and sending must be enforced. Google's Gmail scope table confirms that gmail.compose includes sending, so its name must not be interpreted as a draft-only permission. Whether sending is exposed also depends on the particular server's tools.

Recommended policy: outbound email is never automatic. Keep send operations unavailable during retrieval tasks. If sending is needed later, require approval of the exact sender account, To/Cc/Bcc recipients, subject, body and attachments immediately before dispatch. Any change invalidates that approval.

An email or document can contain hostile instructions aimed at the agent. Google's Docs security guidance explicitly warns about indirect prompt injection. Treat retrieved material as evidence, never authority to contact someone. If dispatch times out, inspect the resulting mail state before considering another attempt: a repeated action could duplicate the message. Apply the same reasoning in your MCP security checklist.

How to connect it safely

  1. Choose the implementation and account. Record whether you will use Google's remote server or a named community repository. Start with an approved test account and non-sensitive documents. Write down the task, allowed reads and prohibited writes before signing in.
  2. Prepare Google's prerequisites. For the official route, arrange Developer Preview access and a Google Cloud project. Enable the relevant product API and its MCP service, then configure OAuth consent. The Drive setup guide covers these requirements. Match client credentials and redirect settings to the chosen client; keep secrets outside chat and source control.
  3. Review actual permissions. Inspect the consent request, intended tool set and account identity. Ask for the narrowest supported permissions. If the server requires broader access than the task justifies, use an approved document export instead. For the community implementation, its repository documents --read-only; verify its behavior before using real data.
  4. Add it in the editor. In a compatible VS Code agent session, run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette. Select HTTP for a remote endpoint or Command (stdio) for a reviewed local launch command. Follow the publisher's authentication instructions and inspect trust prompts. VS Code's guide explains this flow; configuration alone does not establish Google OAuth compatibility for your chosen client.
  5. Prove retrieval works. Request a known test document and inspect the tool call and returned content. Compare the summary with the original. Check that the intended account and server were used, then verify write and send operations cannot run unattended.
  6. Define the action gate. Keep any outbound email behind the review described above, or send manually in Gmail. Record approved actions and results without copying credentials or unnecessary document content into logs. Use permissions and data flow to review what leaves the workstation.

When this does not work

A file visible in Drive's web interface may be absent from MCP results. Google's file eligibility rules exclude items blocked by relevant download/copy/print controls, client-side encryption, and other eligibility checks. Context Aware Access can also matter. Searches filter ineligible items; direct file operations can return an error. Broadening OAuth scopes is not a remedy for those restrictions.

An editor may connect to the endpoint but fail authentication or never invoke its tools. Follow the VS Code troubleshooting guidance: inspect configuration, publisher authentication requirements, organizational restrictions and tool availability. A plausible answer without a successful tool result is not proof of retrieval.

A server-side read-only mode also does not authorize every downstream use of returned data. Limit attached material to what the task needs and review where the agent sends that context.

Where Tvijo fits

As of 30 Oct 2026, the DSHREM VS Code extension provides an editor entry point for tasks with selected or attached context. A practical Workspace workflow is to retrieve an authorized document through a separately configured connector, review the relevant excerpt, then attach it to a scoped Tvijo task. This is a proposed workflow, not an advertised ready-made Google Workspace connector.

TvijoCode is a test build based on Code - OSS with the Tvijo extension embedded. Tvijo MCP makes Tvijo callable by a compatible MCP client; editor integration and delegation are planned phases in the dated product documentation. It does not automatically give Tvijo control of another Workspace MCP server. Document context and outbound email authorization remain separate: outbound email is never automatic in the workflow recommended here.

The Tvijo workspace shows Try at $0 as of 30 Oct 2026: up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first, from a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown at $10 for a prepaid-credit request, with metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge. These offers do not establish Workspace integration availability.

FAQ

Is there an official Google Drive MCP server?

Yes. Google's remote Drive server is in Developer Preview as of 30 Oct 2026. Confirm eligibility and setup in the linked official guide before connecting.

Does gmail.compose prevent the agent from sending?

No. That scope includes sending. Restrict exposed operations and require approval of the final message, or send it manually.

Can installing Tvijo MCP connect my Gmail account?

It does not establish that connection. Configure Workspace access separately and supply only authorized task context; check the product documentation before assuming connector support.

Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Gmail) is a trademark of its owner. Tvijo is not affiliated with or endorsed by it.
