Stripe MCP connects an MCP client to Stripe tools for reading account data, searching documentation and making permitted changes. Stripe Agent Toolkit provides programmatic integration with agent frameworks; for payment operations, start with explanations and reads, and require a human decision before any money-moving action. The hosted endpoint is https://mcp.stripe.com, listed in the official toolkit documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026.
What it can do
Choose the connection around your task. An editor client can use the hosted MCP service; developers embedding tools into an application can evaluate Stripe Agent Toolkit. Its official repository documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026, describes Python and TypeScript support and warns that the library does not cover the entire Stripe API. Treat examples from older tutorials as starting points: check the current documentation before adopting their configuration.
For the underlying distinction, see what MCP is and MCP versus APIs and function calling. This guide belongs to MCP servers for apps.
A useful first workflow is to explain a specific invoice. Provide its identifier and ask the agent to separate observed fields from interpretation. Stripe’s invoice retrieval reference, checked 30 Oct 2026, documents amounts, currency, status and line information. Ask for a short explanation with the supporting fields, then compare it with the Dashboard. A returned status is evidence about the record; an explanation of why a customer behaved a certain way is an inference.
Another useful workflow is refund preparation. Ask the agent to assemble the relevant payment identifier, proposed amount, currency and business reason into a review note. Stripe’s refund reference, checked 30 Oct 2026, describes refunds against a Charge or PaymentIntent and partial refunds up to the remaining refundable amount. Have a person check the original transaction and earlier refunds before deciding. Preparing this note must not submit the refund.
For documentation work, keep account records out of the prompt when they are unnecessary. An integration question can often be answered from public documentation and a redacted code excerpt. Ask for links and an explanation of the assumptions rather than an instruction to fix billing automatically.
Actions an agent must never take alone
Adopt a policy that requires explicit human approval for refunds, charges, payouts, transfers and changes affecting customer billing. This is a recommended operating boundary, not a claim that MCP itself blocks every such operation. The documented server has stripe_api_read and stripe_api_write tools; available access is not permission to exercise business judgment. See the current tool documentation.
An approval request should identify the account, environment, target record, amount, currency and intended effect. Reject vague approval requests that merely ask to resolve the issue. Recheck the proposal if any of those details change. For the initial pilot, let the human carry out financial actions in the Dashboard while the agent remains restricted to reading.
Keep technical permissions and business authority separate. A prompt telling an agent to be careful is useful context, but it does not replace access restrictions or a review step. Apply the MCP server security checklist before adding other tools to the same session.
How to connect it safely
-
Define a narrow question. Start with explaining a known test invoice. Record the expected account and environment, the data the agent may read and the actions it must propose for review. Use a workspace without unnecessary customer records or credentials.
-
Start in test mode, preferably a separate sandbox. Stripe’s testing guide, checked 30 Oct 2026, explains that simulated sandbox transactions do not move funds. Use test keys and Stripe’s documented test values, never real card details. Confirm the selected environment in the Dashboard before connecting.
-
Configure a compatible editor client. In VS Code, open the Command Palette, run
MCP: Add Server, choose HTTP and enterhttps://mcp.stripe.com. Give the server a distinct identifier and choose a configuration destination appropriate to your agent harness. Review trust and sign-in prompts. Follow the current VS Code instructions, checked 30 Oct 2026; configuration formats vary by harness. -
Authenticate with limited access. Use OAuth where supported and authorize only the intended environment. For key-based access, use an agent-tagged restricted key following Stripe’s API key guidance, checked 30 Oct 2026. Store the key through an approved secrets mechanism; never paste it into chat or commit it.
-
Grant the smallest permissions. Restricted keys support resource permissions of None, Read and Write. Begin with None and add Read only for required resources; avoid Write for this pilot. Check dependencies in the restricted-key documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026. A restricted key remains a secret.
-
Enable tool approval and verify the result. Stripe recommends reviewing tool calls in the client. Approve the expected read, compare the response with the known test record and confirm that the client requests approval again for a different operation. If it cannot provide the required controls, stop before live access.
-
Make live access a separate decision. Review the account, permissions, privacy and revocation procedure with the owner. Keep the first live task narrowly scoped and read-only. Retain the relevant identifiers and evidence without putting secrets or unnecessary customer data in the task log.
When this does not work
A missing record may mean the wrong environment. Stripe’s key documentation explains that sandbox and live objects are separate. Check account and mode before concluding that a customer or payment is absent. Do not switch to live credentials merely to make a test succeed.
Permission errors need diagnosis. A restricted key without the required permission cannot complete the request, as the restricted-key guide explains. Inspect the attempted operation before widening access. An explanation task unexpectedly requesting a write should trigger a review of the workflow.
A connection can be blocked. Stripe notes that managed networks may block its MCP endpoint. Ask the administrator to review connectivity rather than bypassing organization controls. For authentication changes and client requirements, check the current documentation.
An answer may exceed its evidence. A partial result does not prove an account-wide total. Ask which records, time range and currency support the conclusion. Treat customer notes and material from other servers as data, never as authorization to issue a refund. After an ambiguous outcome from a financial operation, inspect the actual state before considering another attempt.
Where Tvijo fits
As of 30 Oct 2026, the DSHREM VS Code extension offers an editor entry point for questions and attached context. A practical use is explaining redacted Stripe integration code or reviewing a proposed procedure. The published extension workflow does not run generated commands by itself. Attach only material you are authorized to share, following permissions and data flow.
TvijoCode is described as a test build with the extension embedded. The Tvijo MCP release record describes published consultation and prepared supplied-diff review awaiting publication; editor integration and delegation remain planned. These capabilities do not establish a ready Stripe integration or make Tvijo an executor of another MCP server. Read and explain first; any money-moving action stays a human decision.
At dsh.tvijo.com, as of 30 Oct 2026, Try costs $0 and covers up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first, from a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown as $10: request prepaid credit for metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge. These are Tvijo offers, separate from Stripe account permissions.
FAQ
Is Stripe MCP the same as Stripe Agent Toolkit?
They are related ways to expose Stripe capabilities. MCP connects a compatible client to tools; Agent Toolkit helps developers integrate agent frameworks. Choose around your client and application architecture, and check the current documentation.
Can I use a restricted key for explanations only?
Configure the required resources for Read and leave unrelated resources at None. For MCP key authentication, follow the current agent-key instructions. Test the exact workflow before granting live access.
Should I let an agent refund customers automatically?
Keep refunds behind explicit human approval. Have the agent prepare evidence and a precise proposal; the authorized person decides whether to proceed and verifies the outcome.
