There is no fixed AI coding agent cost per task: API-backed work is metered by usage, while included subscription usage does not create a separate API charge per task. There is also no universal token allowance for a coding task; context, generated output and repeated attempts affect consumption. A free AI coding agent start can be a limited preview, so check its stopping conditions before running work (Claude Code cost documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026).

What it can do

AI coding agents with suitable editor tools can change files and run terminal commands; the available permissions matter (VS Code security documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026). Useful trial briefs include explaining a failing test, proposing validation for a function, or preparing a patch for review. Treat these as requests with acceptance criteria, not guaranteed outcomes.

For example, give the agent a failing test and the relevant function, ask it to explain the cause, then inspect its proposed change. A broad repository cleanup is a different experiment: it is harder to define when the work is complete. For more background, browse AI agents explained.

What a token is

A token is a unit a model processes: it can represent a word, part of a word or a character. Counts depend on the tokenizer and language, so a word is not a fixed number of tokens (Anthropic glossary, checked 30 Oct 2026).

Input includes more than your typed question. For an API integration, count the structured request, including system instructions and tool definitions. Anthropic documents a way to estimate input before generation; that estimate does not predict the final output or the complete task (token-counting documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026).

When asking how many tokens per task you need, define the task boundary first. Does it end at a suggested patch, a passing test, or a reviewed change? Record consumption through that endpoint, including unsuccessful attempts. Otherwise, a short first response and a finished correction become misleadingly comparable.

Calculate a token-based example

For a coding-agent integration using the Claude API, Anthropic lists Claude Sonnet 4.6 at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, as of 30 Oct 2026 (official pricing).

The following is illustrative arithmetic using those rates, not a measured task:

Usage assumed Calculation Cost
20,000 input tokens 20,000 × $3 / 1,000,000 $0.06
2,000 output tokens 2,000 × $15 / 1,000,000 $0.03
Combined Input + output $0.09

This assumes base token rates without caching or other charges; check the dated pricing conditions. It is an independent API example, not a Tvijo tariff.

For your own worksheet, keep token charges, separately billed tools, service fees and subscription allocation in separate columns. A budget ceiling is permission to consume up to a boundary; it is not the expected price of an accepted result.

Measure your own cost per accepted task

Choose a bounded task you can verify, such as correcting an invalid-input case while preserving existing behavior. Save the starting code, the acceptance check and the final diff. Record both successful and abandoned attempts, along with the billing mode.

For API spending, divide total recorded charges by accepted tasks. If none are accepted, report the spend and failed outcomes separately; do not manufacture an average. For subscription work, you may allocate part of the subscription fee for planning, but label that as your accounting choice rather than an additional provider charge.

Long context, verbose tool results and additional agent work can increase consumption; Claude Code documents these factors (cost guidance, checked 30 Oct 2026). Compare like-for-like briefs and acceptance criteria before deciding which workflow fits your budget. Keep an unresolved billing entry visible until you can reconcile it.

How to connect it safely

  1. Choose the billing route. Before signing in through an editor client, establish whether the run uses included subscription usage, API billing or prepaid service credit. Record the applicable limit and what happens when it is exhausted.
  2. Prepare a reviewable workspace. Preserve existing changes and use a separate working copy for the trial. Keep credentials and unrelated private material out of the context. Read permissions and data flow before attaching project content.
  3. Review editor permissions. In VS Code, inspect Workspace Trust, tool approvals and supported sandbox controls. Configure network access separately; sandboxing alone does not imply blocked outbound access (official security guidance, checked 30 Oct 2026).
  4. Connect only what the task needs. Review any MCP server before trusting it, and leave unnecessary tools disabled. Use the MCP security checklist when external tools are involved; check the current client documentation for configuration details.
  5. Run a bounded trial and inspect evidence. Ask for a specific change, examine the diff, run the relevant acceptance check and compare the usage record with the result. Stop and reassess when the scope changes.

When this does not work

A subscription dollar estimate is being treated as an invoice. Claude Code says its session cost figure is not relevant to billing for included Pro or Max subscription usage (cost documentation, checked 30 Oct 2026). Confirm the active billing route before interpreting a displayed number.

The task boundary keeps moving. A bug fix that becomes a refactor needs a new decision about scope and budget. Record the original attempt rather than hiding it inside the next task.

An agent's answer substitutes for verification. Require a diff and an observable acceptance check. A confident explanation alone does not establish that the requested behavior works.

Access is broader than the job requires. Editor tools and terminal commands can affect your environment. Follow the VS Code security guidance, and review changes before integration. A spending limit does not replace access controls.

Where Tvijo fits

As of 30 Oct 2026, Tvijo offers related entry points with distinct roles:

  • The DSHREM VS Code extension provides an editor entry for questions with selected context, capped tasks and usage receipts. Use it for a bounded question about code; follow the extension installation guide for its sign-in flow.
  • TvijoCode embeds the extension in a Code - OSS editor. Its published guide describes a Windows x64 test build, unsigned and without automatic updates. Check those constraints before choosing it for a workstation.
  • Tvijo MCP makes consultation available to a compatible MCP client. The release-status page describes supplied-diff review as prepared functionality awaiting package publication, and editor integration and delegation as planned work. Consultation is not general local execution.

The Tvijo offer, as of 30 Oct 2026, shows the Try plan at $0:

"Up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever is reached first. Shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO."

The Service credit plan is shown as $10 and lets you request prepaid credit. It uses metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; creating an order is not a charge. These conditions describe the offer, not a guaranteed cost per coding task. Read costs and budgets to distinguish a task cap from recorded spend.

FAQ

How many tokens does a coding task use?

There is no universal count. Measure the full attempt through your chosen acceptance point, rather than counting only the prompt or final answer.

Can I start with a free AI coding agent?

A limited preview can provide a starting point. Tvijo's Try conditions above include task, token and sponsored-usage boundaries, plus a shared daily pool.

Does prepaid credit guarantee a fixed price per task?

No. A credit balance and a spending cap describe available funds and boundaries. Use the task's recorded usage to assess its actual charge.
