The Figma MCP server gives a coding agent structured design context from Figma so it can implement a UI in your codebase. Available through remote and desktop connections, it supplies design information while the agent writes the final code; generated code still needs review, as Figma explains.
What it can do
For a settings panel, an agent can request the frame's layout and component context, inspect its screenshot, and retrieve variables used for colors, spacing and typography. The documented tools include get_design_context, get_screenshot and get_variable_defs. Code Connect mappings can help it reuse your existing components. See the official tool reference.
A useful task is to implement that panel with your existing form controls, then explain any differences from the design. Supply the component directory and requirements for validation, loading and errors. Review whether the patch actually imports the shared controls or quietly creates similar-looking replacements.
Treat missing behavior as an open requirement. A successful payment screen does not establish how your application should handle a declined payment. Ask the agent to list assumptions before editing, and have a designer or product owner resolve the ones that affect behavior.
Figma also documents canvas-writing and live-UI capture workflows through the remote server. Availability depends on the feature, client and access rules; do not treat every Figma MCP connection as read-only. Consult the current feature overview before enabling writes. This guide's connection exercise is limited to reading design context.
Remote or desktop: choose deliberately
| Connection | What matters for a UI task |
|---|---|
| Remote | Figma recommends its hosted endpoint, https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. No desktop app is required. Supply a frame or layer link. |
| Desktop | Runs through the Figma desktop app at http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp. It also supports prompting from the current selection. |
The remote setup guide lists supported clients. Figma says clients must be listed in its MCP catalog; an arbitrary MCP-capable editor is not automatically supported.
The desktop server requires a Dev or Full seat on Professional, Education, Organization, Government or Enterprise. Figma for Government supports desktop only. The desktop server does not support writing to the canvas or sending live UI to Figma. These requirements are documented in the desktop guide, checked on 30 Oct 2026.
Read-tool allowances also depend on plan and seat. As of 30 Oct 2026, Figma lists up to 20 calls per month for Starter users and View/Collab seats; eligible Full/Dev seats have daily and per-minute limits. Check the current access table before planning repeated iterations. A working login does not remove those limits.
For the deployment tradeoffs, read remote versus local MCP servers. A local server address describes the connection to Figma; separately consider where your agent processes the returned context.
How to connect it safely
-
Choose the client and scope. Use a client documented by Figma. Its VS Code recipe requires GitHub Copilot enabled. Start in a workspace containing only the project you intend to change; agree on which design and repository files the task may use.
-
Configure the remote server in VS Code. Run
MCP: Open Workspace Folder Configuration. Inmcp.json, add afigmaentry underservers, settingtypetohttpandurltohttps://mcp.figma.com/mcp. Preserve existing entries. Save, click Start above the server name, then follow the Figma sign-in and Allow access prompts. These are the official VS Code setup steps. -
If you need desktop selection, use the desktop path instead. Open a Figma Design file in the desktop app. With nothing selected, enter Dev Mode and click Enable desktop MCP server. In VS Code, use
MCP: Add Server, choose HTTP and enterhttp://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp. Keep the app and server running. Follow the desktop instructions for your client. -
Read before editing. For remote use, right-click the intended frame or layer in Figma, choose Copy link to selection, and include that link in your request. Ask for a description of the target and its variables first. This follows Figma's link-based workflow. Confirm the returned design is the one you intended.
-
Constrain the implementation. Name the framework, shared components and permitted files. Ask for a proposed patch, keep canvas changes outside this initial task, and review tool actions before allowing them. The VS Code MCP guide and MCP security checklist provide broader setup and permission guidance.
-
Validate the rendered result. Inspect the diff, run the project's relevant checks, and compare the UI with the design. Test keyboard use, narrow screens, long text and error states. Record unresolved assumptions alongside the patch rather than accepting visual similarity as completion.
When this does not work
The design cannot be accessed. MCP only works with files the signed-in account can access. For remote authentication, Figma documents whoami to inspect identity, plans and seats. Check the link, account and owning plan before changing permissions. See access troubleshooting.
The request is too large. Figma warns that large selections can slow tools, cause errors or produce incomplete results. Ask for a smaller section, or use get_metadata to outline the design before requesting detailed context for individual parts. See Figma's large-frame guidance.
The implementation ignores your conventions. The agent needs those conventions supplied through mappings, variables, rules or prompts, according to Figma's server-versus-agent explanation. Give it an existing component as a reference and compare its imports and behavior during review.
Where Tvijo fits
As of 30 Oct 2026, the DSHREM VS Code extension provides an editor entry for questions with selected or attached context and task receipts. For a UI task, you can explicitly attach approved implementation context and discuss the resulting code there. That does not establish a built-in connection to Figma.
TvijoCode is a Code - OSS-based editor with the extension embedded, described as a test build. Tvijo MCP makes Tvijo callable by a compatible MCP client. Its release-status article distinguishes published consultation from prepared diff review awaiting publication; editor integration and delegation remain planned phases. None of these establishes a ready Figma integration. Use a supported Figma client for design retrieval and review generated code before applying it.
At dsh.tvijo.com, as of 30 Oct 2026, Try costs $0 and includes up to 5 tasks, 50,000 tokens or $0.05 of sponsored usage, whichever comes first, from a shared $1 daily pool funded by TVIJO. Service credit is shown as $10 to request prepaid credit, with metered provider usage plus an 8% service markup. Payment collection is not activated; an order is not a charge.

FAQ
Can I use Figma MCP on Starter?
Yes, through the remote path, subject to the read-tool allowance in the dated access table. The desktop path has separate seat requirements.
Can the remote server see my current desktop selection?
Selection-based prompting is desktop-only. For remote requests, provide a frame or layer link, as the tool documentation explains.
Does Figma MCP deliver production-ready code?
The agent writes the final implementation. Review component reuse, accessibility, behavior and project checks before accepting the patch.
