Separate the world from the experiment

A drone proposes a folded bridge for Admiral Senta's fictional station. The story supplies a reason to investigate; it supplies no scientific evidence. On a table, compare a flat paper strip with a folded strip. Ask a narrow question: under the same test conditions, which holds more identical counters before a defined bend? This is a proposed learning activity, not proven research or a claim about bridges that carry people.

Choose what changes and what stays

Change the paper shape while keeping paper type, strip dimensions, support spacing, counter type, and loading position constant. Define the stopping rule before loading, such as the paper touching a marked line below the deck. Use light counters over a tray, with adult supervision for younger participants, and keep small objects away from mouths. If a strip tears or a support shifts, record that interruption rather than silently replacing the result. Rebuild each strip for a fresh trial so earlier bending does not become a hidden variable.

Record before explaining

Make a table with shape, trial, counter count, stopping event, and notes. For an actual observation, record who measured it, when, the method, and the unit; attach the notebook as its source. A photograph helps document the setup but does not replace the measurement. Repetition lets you see variation without erasing inconvenient trials. A difference might reflect folding, loading position, or uneven supports. Describe those alternatives before proposing an explanation, and keep the raw observations beside any summary.

Carry uncertainty into the next test

Use a median to describe the middle trial without claiming a universal material property. A result from this setup does not establish what happens with another paper thickness or support distance. Julia Senta can invite the children to draw the setup while the robot checks the table for missing units. The actual next action is to write the question and stopping rule on paper before building either strip. Then ask a partner to identify one condition that must stay the same.

Try it yourself

DEMO data, entirely invented for practice: flat strip holds 2, 3, 2 counters; folded strip holds 4, 5, 4. Find each median and write a bounded conclusion. Acceptance: medians are 2 and 4 counters; the folded strip's DEMO median is twice the flat strip's, only in this example.
